Six Try 'Bridge Off To A Flying Start

Six Try 'Bridge Off To A Flying Start

Dominic Mitchell13 Sep 2014 - 20:26

'Bridge secured the bonus point in the first half of their opening Kent Two League game, finishing off with six crosses of the whitewash.

'Bridge put on a dominant first half performance securing the bonus point within the first half hour in their opening league game for 2014-15. Despite Dartford Valley flying out of the blocks and going 0-3 up after only a matter of minutes, 'Bridge's try line was rarely troubled throughout the 80 minutes.

Dartford Valley were much improved on last season with a number of new faces and it was the new boys who really shone for the visitors.

The visitors started in spritely fashion forcing a turnover off their kick off and executed their game plan to good effect winning themselves a kickable penalty in the opening couple of minutes as 'Bridge struggled to keep themselves onside. O'Connor playing at fly half made short work of the simple kick to put Dartford Valley 0-3 to the good.

'Bridge were not going to take the pressure they had just endured and hit back almost immediately. Some lovely interlinking play from Alex Wilson, Phillip Cox (both playing in the second row for this game) and Andrew Shaw at Eight saw Cox cross the whitewash and able to run in under the posts to make it a regulation extra two point for Peter Jecks. 7-3 and 'Bridge looking in good shape.

The 'Bridge forwards were back on the scoreboard soon enough, this time it was Shaw who hit an incising short line for the second 'Bridge score under the posts. Once again Jecks made it seven points so and the home team cruised into a 14-3 lead.

Dartford Valley attempted to hit back but their inability to control scrum time meant the one promising attack they had was snuffed out as they gave away yet another penalty for technical offences in the front row and 'Bridge safely cleared their lines. O'Connor was to have an ambitious long range shot at goal after 'Bridge were caught off their feet a ruck but his effort dropped short.

It was to be 'Bridge next on the score board with third try as a full length of the pitch move was rounded off by tighthead Ben Shires with his first try for the Club after his move to the Black & Yellows from Leigh last season. Once again Jecks was on song to push the score out to 21-3.

Even as the scoreboard slipped away from them, the visitors stuck at it and proved to be a much more determined and resolute side than last season. Their efforts were rewarded as yet another ruck infringement as over eager defence was caught off side allowed O'Connor his second successful penalty shot of the half.

'Bridge however could sense a bonus point and forth try came more or less on the stroke of half time. Cox was his second of the game bouncing off two desperate defenders from close range for the home team's bonus point and with the conversion taking the score to 28-6 at half time.

The second half was for the most part uneventful; 'Bridge possible guilty of trying to force things at this stage resulting in less effective attacks. Dartford had their second decent chance at a try but again it was snuffed out with minimal panic from the home defence, a wonderful cover tackle by Jecks led to a turnover and again 'Bridge cleared their lines with ease.

In the last fifteen minutes of play the game sprung back into life with the 'Bridge wingers getting in on the act and the scoreboard. Tiring Dartford Valley defence first let Bobby Weaver in after some good footwork by the right wing and Jecks, once again added the extra two.

With that Dartford's heads seemed to drop and the remainder if the game was played out as a rather stodgy affair until David Copeland pounced on a loose ball from the side of a scrum a sprint three quarters of the field to go over for 'Bridge's sixth try and take the score to 40-6.

With just enough time for the restart, 'Bridge pragmatically got the ball off the park.

A reassuringly solid display by Edenbridge who sit second in league after Round One as a result. A trip to Faversham awaits next weekend and 'Bridge will be looking to do better than the 22-0 defeat there just before Christmas last season.
