Bonus Point Win Over Top of the League

Bonus Point Win Over Top of the League

Dominic Mitchell9 Dec 2013 - 14:08

'Bridge front up to finally get that fourth try and do it in some style against first placed Askeans.

It was always going to be a big one; Askeans riding high at the top of the league since the start of the season and the new boys on the block going head to head at the Rec. 'Bridge keen to extend their winning run to 6 on the bounce, Askeans with a point to prove after their loss to Lordswood last weekend.

It was probably Askes who came out of the block quickest as 'Bridge stuck to their now traditional game plan of letting the opposition race into a lead to then reel them back in later. A couple of early tries benefitted the visitors as their ran in relatively unopposed, pouncing on Edenbridge errors. Possibly guilty of trying to play too much rugby too early, 'Bridge were fortunate that Askes appeared to have forgotten to bring a kicker with them as both conversions were missed to leave things at 0-10 in favour of the League Leaders.

Back came 'Bridge however. After letting Askes get away to a 0-10 lead, the mission was accomplished and it was now obvious how they wanted to play and how they didn't like 'Bridge playing... A strong passage of play resulted in a driving maul sending Sam Batchelor over for the hosts opening try. Uncharacteristically, Peter Jecks missed the conversion to leave things at 5-10.

Askes were to score again through some sloppy tackling to extend their lead to 5-15 after their fly half shanked another kick horribly. It was to be their last score of the match.

Bobby Weaver nearly went in for a second on the stroke of half time however it as adjudged that he had jumped a tackle in the process of scoring under the posts and so play was called back to an earlier penalty infringement by Askeans only to see another usual-banker kick missed by Jecks. Half time then and 'Bridge trailed 5-15.

The second half started with a bang as some lovely interlinking play saw Bobby Weaver carry on where he left of at half time and race in under the posts for Peter Jecks to the emphatically add the extras. 12-15 and game very much on.

'Bridge next score was to come from a rejuvenated set piece as a 5 metre line out set a strong maul to see second row Alex Cacciamani go over for the third try. Unfortunately this conversion was also missed to leave things at 17-15; 'Bridge had seized the initiative.

The resulting restart was claimed well by Alex Wilson who set off up the field. A strong run bouncing 4 or 5 tackles eventually unleased Bobby Weaver to go in for his second and 'Bridge fourth try. Bonus point secured as well as putting themselves two scored ahead of the visitors.

The final fifteen minutes of the game were played out with 'Bridge asking plenty of questions of their visitors who we having to play from deep and force the issue. The relentless effort resulting in Cacciamani seeing yellow for repeated team offences against the Askean rolling maul but even though they had to finish the game with only 14 men, 'Bridge hung on and finished the game by far the stronger.

An excellent performance all round and real mark of where this ambitious club has reached!
