With the Rec out of action owing to Edenbridge Bonfire Night, 'Bridge made the trip over to Chatham to take on Lordswood on their own patch.
Lordswood have been flying high in Kent 2 so far this season, only Askeans' extra game played keeping them off the top spot. They had also dished out something of a pasting to 'Bridge back in September during the pairs Kent Vase second round tie.
'Bridge, after a hugely disappointing and below par performance at New Ash Green looked to have turned the corner at Whitstable. Mid-week training had been brutal and the players were ready to front up. The stage was set for a great afternoon.
The game started even enough and it was in fact 'Bridge that had the first chance of points on the 10 minutes mark after a high tackle on Tristan Fair who was in the process of making a great break on the near-side touchline. Kicking into a very strong wind, Peter Jecks managed to shave the woodwork but unfortunately on the wrong side of the post.
Lords came back hard using their powerful pack. Eventually the worked themselves a penalty which was kicked to the corner. A simple catch and drive was finally powered over on the 22nd minute after some good disruption by 'Bridge. A horribly sliced kick saw the score at 5-0 to the home side.
It was then 'Bridge's turn to go on the offensive and enjoyed a decent spell of pressure. This resulted in one of the home second rows being binned on the 35 minute mark for deliberately killing the ball on the 5 metre line. A man up an looking good, 'Bridge opted for the scrum but once again met the power of the home forwards. The ball turned over, it was not long before Lords were back attacking in the Edenbridge 22. Strong defence was taken to over-exuberance and captain Gary Stevens was show a yellow for what was deemed to be a tip tackle. This time the home fly half made no error from the kicking tee on the stroke of half time to leave the score at 8-0.
A man down in defence now saw 'Bridge still under pressure at the start of the second half and it only took 5 minutes for Lords to stretch the visiting defence to its limits allowing the outside centre to skirt out wide for their second try. It proved to be too wide for the extras however so 'Bridge now trailed 13-0.
Still a man down, 'Bridge steeled themselves and took the game to Lordswood. Peter Jecks filling in at 12 took the ball on some lovely carries, one of which picking apart the home defence to allow an off-load for Bobby Weaver to score the first of his hatrick for the afternoon. Jecks was back in the frame adding the conversion. 13-7 and game on!
Weaver's second came only 5 minutes later when an identical break by Jecks led to another offload to put the 'Bridge winger-come-scrum-half back in under the posts. the simple conversion put 'Bridge ahead.
Lords were not dead yet though and they came back at 'Bridge like you would expect a top placed team to do. Their efforts were rewarded when they took a quick penalty after a scrum offence 5 metres out for their nine to dart in. Another shanked kicked though saw their lead at 18-14 and only a few minutes to play.
'Bridge dug deep and took the game to Lords, winning the re-start and forcing a 5 metre line out. A home offence at the resulting maul allowed Weaver the opportunity for a quick penalty of his own and with some help from his forwards, snaffled his way over the try line with the last play to guarantee and excellent win. Jecks stepped up to add 2 more points to leave an ecstatic 'Bridge side 18-21 winners.
