An excellent dropout from skipper Lee Roberts got Edenbridge pressing on the front foot straight from the off. Hard yards made, strong first-up tackles and some decent decision making saw Edenbridge go 5-0 up due to a 1st senior try for 17-year-old Academy player Harry Warne. Unfortunately, it was not to be the perfect start as the conversion bounced off the post.
Back came the stubborn Cranbrook side, however. Not happy to play 2nd fiddle the away team pressed hard and came back with an unconverted try if their own following a second go at a tapped penalty from 5 metres out. Somehow their kicker missed the conversion from right in front and the score was level at 5-5.
Next on the score sheet was the second of the three Academy boys on the park, Henry Porter. A fantastically powerful and quick break from eventual Man of the Match Harry Warne and a perfectly timed inside pass to beat the last ditch defensive efforts saw the young openside flanker in for his first try in senior rugby. The future of the club is definitely looking bright. Lee Roberts was on song with the conversion this time a 'Bridge led 12-5.
Last season's prolific try-scorer Robert Mitchell was next on the score sheet, busting through 5 despairing Cranbrook tackles. Despite the missed conversion, the comfortable looking 17-5 halftime lead looked as though 'Bridge might pile on the points in the 2nd half. Shortly before halftime however, debutant Rory Johnston was sent to the sin bin for a team yellow after the referee lost patience with 'Bridge's efforts to move at the breakdown. An unfortunate blow for someone only 2 minutes into their debut in Black and Yellow.
Despite a settled looking start to the second half, 'Bridge were to be rocked by a second yellow for Johnston, only back on the field for three minutes after his original yellow. The back-rower adjudged to be guilty of pulling down a maul that Cranbrook had marching towards the try-line. The fact that he didn't go for a penalty try, however, was telling.
With 'Bridge now down to 14 players for the remaining 27 minutes of the game they needed something special to get them out of their half and to get the scoreboard ticking again. That special spark was to be provided by Sam Tan who pounced on a terrible attempted kick by the Cranbrook winger to race in untouched from 40 metres out. With Roberts on hand to add the extras 'Bridge looked to be in a comfortable spot 24-5 to the good.
'Bridge were not yet finished and the try of the day came from another player on their first start for the club. With an excellent lineout ball plucked from the air, new scrum-half Christian Haysom dummied and sniped his way to the try line with an individually brilliant 50-meter run in. A further successful conversion from Roberts saw 'Bridge out to a 31-5 lead.
Back came Cranbrook however with 2 tries of their own (only one converted) as short-handed 'Bridge began to tire and the referee clamped down on even the tiniest indiscretion by the home side.
At 31-17 there was just enough time for the final score of the day saw with yet another debutant Jake Sheldon crossing the white-wash. He powered his way through several tired defenders for his 1st try for the club. Final score 36-17.
