The game kicked off with Bridge playing into a stiff breeze, it didn’t take them long to take an early advantage, with Jack Lydiard playing at 10 making a darting sprint through the advancing Thanet pack, when finally stopped he off loaded to Charlie who with a strong run made it over in the corner.
Sam Sharpe was given the kicking duties today, with good direction it fell just short, 5-0.
The next 20 minutes saw Bridge lose the ball continuously at the break down, through lack of numbers and some inconsistent decisions. During this period Thanet came back taking the score to 14-5.
Just before the break Charlie was on the end for some good play to go over for his second try of the day, 14-10. Thanet came straight back to make it 19-10 at the break. In the second half with the wind on their backs Bridge came out full of fight and not willing to let this game slip away. It was the back row of Jake, Ollie and Thom who would lead the pack forward to start winning some quality ball for Bridge. After a spell of 5 minutes in the Thanet 22 Thom went over for a well-deserved first try of the season, with Sam scoring his first points from the tee Bridge were marching back 19-17.
From the restart a scrum was called, a great drive from the Bridge 8 saw Arthur strike against the head, Bridge were back in business. For the next 15 minutes the Thanet pack could not get a sniff of the ball, going backwards in every scrum. When the Bridge received a penalty on the Thanet 22 Ollie took the ball on a side-wards run across the front of all of the advancing Thanet players, with the winger to beat he charged through to take the score to 24-22.
The Ref called 4 minutes to play. With Thanet doing a great job in absorbing massive pressure from Bridge in their own half it was Ben Cracknell who followed up his two tries from last week with a fine score a metre inside the post. Bridge were in front 24-27, Sam lined up the kick with the home support doing their best to keep quiet (well most of them) the kick fell just short.
The Ref said there was enough time for the restart, then followed a strange passage of play with the Ref giving Thanet 4 consecutive penalties to take them up the pitch to the Edenbridge 22. The last of which was 5 metres in from the touch line where the Thanet home supporters were going wild. The Thanet captain was undecided whether to kick for the draw or go for the win. The Bridge in disarray at the decisions on the park were not ready for the drive from the Thanet flanker and the game was lost 29-27.
All credit to the 15 players for the fight back and they should have clinched the win. But the game was lost in the first half by too many mistakes. It was a pleasure to play Thanet and we hope to meet again in this season (this time at home.)
