Improving performance in a feisty game

Improving performance in a feisty game

Alan Erskine20 Nov 2018 - 10:21

Great game for the spectators just not quite the result

The game started in a sombre mood with our opposition hearing that their Chairman had passed away unexpectedly during the night so a minutes silence was a fitting start to the game. Our thoughts go out to his family and the wider members of Heathfield and Waldron RFC.

This game was always going to be a good hard battle and 'Bridge were up for it following their spirited performance few weeks ago in the friendly.

Starting with 15 of the correct age group and with the assistance of 3 under 15's on the bench we were better off than the last game at the start.

That being said and early converted try for the opposition was a bit of a shock, although the boys were playing far better than normal in the opening 15 minutes.

The game was a battle in the middle of the park and fairly evenly contested with 'Bridge getting close a number of times but just not quick enough at the breakdown to capitalise on the pressure.

Two more tries and one conversion half way through the first period were the only scores up to half time with a dogged 'Bridge defence keeping out a number of attacks from Heathfield who by this time had lost the referee . Half time score 0-19.

More of the same for the second half with more attack and fire from 'Bridge. By this time the game was getting a bit fraught with complaints from both sides about missed infringements from the referee.

Around 20 minutes into the second half this came to ahead with a Heathfield Player being given a yellow card for constant complaining to the ref. There then followed a period of really hard fought Rugby which neither side came out on top of albeit Heathfield were lucky to avoid a Red card following a dump tackle on Bobby.

This seemed to fire the boys up even more and with the changes made at half time the fresher legs from Bridge seemed to be giving us the upper hand.

Unfortunately, a back injury close to full time meant the game needed to be transferred to pitch 2 whilst the ambulance was called. Luckily it was not needed and we hope the Heathfield player has recovered.

The change in venue seemed to affect 'Bridge more and the eventual score was 0-31 although all agreed that the scoreline was not reflective of the effort or the play put in by Edenbridge.

We are seeing small improvements every time we play and the fact the team appears to be far happier and supportive shows through the manner in which they play for and with each other.

A few weeks of training before our away match against Chichester in December. Lots to work on so lets make sure everyone gets down to training and continues the momentum and improvement.
